Absence request during term time

Please can we remind you about the regulations around taking your young people out of school during term time. The DfE has some very clear guidelines around this which I am detailing below:-

‘Head teachers should not grant leave of absence unless there are exceptional circumstances. The application must be made in advance and the head teacher must be satisfied that there are exceptional circumstances based on the individual facts and circumstances of the case which warrant the leave. Where a leave of absence is granted, the head teacher will determine the number of days a pupil can be away from school. A leave of absence is granted entirely at the head teacher’s discretion.’ (School Attendance – Guidance for Maintained Schools, Academies, Independent School and Local Authorities – Nov 2016)

We are in the fortunate position that attendance at Uplands is outstanding and we want to continue this trend, thus ensuring all students are in school for as much of the year as is possible, to give them the greatest chance of success.

Having said this, we also appreciate that for some families and young people it is very difficult to take holidays in the busy periods of the year, due to their complex needs. We would ask you therefore to think carefully, as we are sure you already do, about when and how you take holiday with your young people, and if you need to request a holiday in term time that you do so using the form (follow link below), so we can make sure all requests are dealt with in the appropriate way.
